Kors PBS Special 2nite on Vet jailed until he agreed to say wounds were pre-existing

Fri Jun 13, 2008 at 02:50:35 PM PDT

From Joshua Kors:

"The show, 'Now,' is a collaboration with PBS reporter Maria Hinojosa.  We tell the story of Sgt. Chuck Luther, who was struck by mortar fire in Iraq, then jailed until he agreed to sign papers saying his wounds were pre-existing.  Luther is an eloquent speaker with a powerful story.  I hope you'll tune in--and share this message with friends and family so they can see what's happening to so many of our soldiers."

Shocker: GOP plays politics with veterans!

Fri May 02, 2008 at 10:40:21 AM PDT

Via Think Progress:

On Tuesday, around 100 veterans and a dozen congressmen gathered on Capitol Hill to rally in support of Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) 21st Century G.I. Bill, which boasts the bipartisan support of 56 cosponsors.

In seeking the support of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — whom Webb said "needs to get on the bill" in order to secure more Republican support — Webb told McCain "several times that this is not a political issue." Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) pointed to the bill’s bipartisan support: "[P]eople like John Warner and James Inhofe are on it."

According to the Congressional record, however, Inhofe (R-OK) quietly removed his name from the list of cosponsors on Tuesday — the same day as the Capitol Hill rally.

Here's just one of the ways that presidential politics intrudes on Congressional politics.

Everyone knows that Jim Webb's "New GI Bill" is a no-brainer. The recruits we've sent to Iraq and Afghanistan in exchange for promises of educational benefits absolutely must get their due. But current law gives them a mere pittance compared to what the actual costs of going to college are. Webb's bill seeks to remedy that, boosting the assistance to a level that's actually capable of giving our veterans a decent shot at paying the bills at a decent school.

McCain can't afford to be seen as being against that. But because he's running for president on the platform that Democrats are evil terrorists, he also can't be seen cooperating with them (even as they fall over themselves to claim they'll "reach out" and "work with the other side," by the way). So what's a 71 year old whose Sugar Mama wife buys him eight houses and a private jet (but won't release her tax returns) to do?

Why, introduce your own new GI Bill, of course. Or better yet, get a surrogate to do it for you, so that you don't look petty. And that's just what McCain did, with a hat tip to none other than his number one sycophant, the man with whom he teamed up to shamefully surrender his anti-torture principles to Bush, Lindsey Graham.

And now, quietly, the Republicans who were on board with Webb's bill (because remember, it's a no-brainer) begin to discover heretofore unknown reservations about the bill. Reservations which are, of course, magically remedied in McCain's Graham's bill. Or so we're told, anyway. The bill wasn't even introduced until Tuesday. But I'm sure that's plenty of time to become certain about the necessity of withdrawing from a bill you've been a co-sponsor of for two months, as Inhofe did.

So there's your McMaverick, who rises above petty partisan politics in service to our men and women in uniform, America. Webb has worked tirelessly -- in the age of the "60 votes to pass anything" Senate -- to get 56 co-sponsors for his bill. And just as he's nearing the ability to close the deal, McMaverick jets in on the wife's puddle jumper to start peeling people away. In addition to Inhofe, look for Susan Collins (R-ME), Pete Domenici (R-NM), and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) -- who are currently cosponsors of both bills -- to be pressured to drop their support for Webb's.

And why? Over genuine policy differences? Almost certainly not, though that's what their claim will be. No, this will be so that Mr. Republican Presidential Candidate doesn't have to admit he's working with Democrats, even as he campaigns on being the McMaverick who'll cross party lines to do right by our veterans.

Jim Webb has him dead to rights:

"He’s so full of it."

American Legion Scamming Veterans?

Sun Feb 10, 2008 at 05:50:14 AM PDT

They want you Vets to believe they're not, it's All a Mistake!

Or so they , quickly? backtracked, only after one Retired Air Force Major, Robert Hanafin, sent the letter to ABC News, you'll find that link, in PDF, below as well as they're apology in PDF.

Bobby, is not one you want to piss off.

Oh and it seems the Veterans Charities, those given extremely low grades on actually helping Veterans, while doing more to help themselves, are still playing their game, more about that below.

Could this be why, the right leaning American Legion, has been virtually Quiet, along with the VFW, on all the reports coming to light about treatment, and shortchanging Again, of the returning Iraq and Afgan Veterans, to busy figuring ways, Illegally, to enhance their dwindling membership and coffers!

[Ca-48] When unsure, ask for advice.

Mon Nov 05, 2007 at 04:19:49 PM PDT

I need some serious advice.  As a candidate, several times this weekend, I posted two videos that I thought would get a lot of attention, highlight how out of touch John Campbell [R, Ca-48] is, and develop buzz for my campaign with the netroots -- to my chagrin -- nothing.  What did I do wrong?  I don't want to repeat the mistakes in the future and I am humble enough to take advice, no matter how brutal.

I've posted below, the Friday morning post(with the videos and links) just as it appeared.

Note:  I know that "repeating" posts is not Kosher.  This is not a repeat, it's a request for advice and help.

Thank you,

Give it to me straight [Ca-48].

Kick-in-their-teeth video

Sat Nov 03, 2007 at 07:56:31 AM PDT

John Campbell's [R, Ca-48] unscripted answer to a question, disclosed how he really feels about veterans.  It's his first "macaca" statement of the campaign.
Three veterans were there, heard it, and go on record in our latest ad.  Watch it here.  I have also posted a second video that explains why veterans matter so much to me.

Three veterans heard John Campbell's [R, Ca-48] macaca statement. They go on the record to tell the truth, and to demand that Campbell apologize to veterans.

Serve your country, get shafted by the government, again

Thu Oct 04, 2007 at 11:23:34 AM PDT

A little less than three years ago my eldest son came bounding into the house to talk to me and his step-dad about joining the Army or Marines.  His friends were joining and he wanted to, too.  I have to say that when he announced to us what he was thinking I was more than a little appalled.

I understood the desire to be with one’s friends and the picture the recruiters had given him.  I also understood how vehemently he was opposed to a rich man’s war that the poor and middle class were fighting.  What I hadn’t counted on was the effect of what the Republican held house and senate and it’s upping the interest on student loans would have on my son.

Military Capitalism? w/Poll

Wed May 02, 2007 at 11:41:00 PM PDT

According to a recent article the US ARMY is losing mid level Sergeants and low level officers at a near alarming rate.  http://news.yahoo.com/...
Many officials see this as evidence that the military is breaking.

If the military cannot keep its mid-management team it will clearly be forced into the awkward position of promoting unqualified individuals too quickly or, even worse, have upper management accept the daily responsibilities of a mid level Staff Sergeant.

The military's solution?  Signing bonuses.

My Grandmother and Congressman Lampson - A Report Back.

Fri Apr 20, 2007 at 02:44:55 PM PDT

Thank you to the Daily Kos community for your response and suggestions to the diary I posted on Sunday.  I promised an update when I had something to report.  If you missed the diary, it's too long and involved a story for me to recap it here, so please visit the diary itself.

If you just do NOT have time and you missed the diary, the very very short summary is that I was slated to visit Congressman Nick Lampson's (TX-22) office this past Monday to enlist their assistance in helping my Grandmother deal with her Veteran-supplied HMO.  I made that visit, and I have a lot to report.

Follow me over the fold.

The Other Walter Reed or 400,000 Vets Still Waiting For Their Checks

Sat Apr 07, 2007 at 08:39:14 PM PDT

Home, Wounded, Disabled and Broke. Uncle Sam and the Recruiter around the corner made big promises. I can hear them now. " Son, once you fight for Uncle Sam, we will take care of you for life. We are like one big Family but better. " Sounded great, but for most the Vets it's not why they signed up, they did it out of a sense of duty, honor, family tradition, or maybe just to get a education, and a job. Nothing wrong with any of those reason, heck I tip my hat to all of them. Most the Vets excepts the newest ones from the last 20 yrs or so, took it for granted the Government would do the right thing if anything happen to them. That is the way it was once upon a time. Now ?

Nearly 400,000 disability claims were pending as of February, including 135,741 that exceeded VA's 160-day goal for processing them. The department takes six months, on average, to process a claim, and the waiting time for appeals averages nearly two years.

That's 5 and 1/2 months IF you are approve, and it's a big IF it seems.

How the government is saving Billions by screwing combat veterans

Thu Mar 22, 2007 at 11:07:59 PM PDT

I have been writing about this issue for months now, since NPR broke the Fort Carson story of punishing soldiers for having PTSD and then diagnosing them with Personality Disorders.

Instead of getting them help for the PTSD symptoms they are suffering from going to Iraq and seeing the horrors of war, the military command of Fort Carson is pushing the soldiers out the door with no benefits, telling them they can get help when they get home and go to the Veterans Affairs Hopsital, except they are LYING to them, if you sign the quickie discharge they are offering a Chapter 5-13 you are signing away your rights to healthcare and your ability to file a claim for PTSD, because you are signing a statement saying that you came into the military with  PDO's which means the government owes you and your family nothing, it's quite possible you are going to owe them thousands.

Veteran's benefits? Please help

Fri Mar 16, 2007 at 01:40:37 PM PDT

I apologize in advance that this diary will not be lengthy.   However, I need help in refuting (if possible) a letter to the editor in my local paper.  The writer refers to a letter by the mother of a Marine who had written earlier and who stated that Bush and our Representative, Virginia Foxx, had cut Veteran's benefits.

This writer then says, "you say that Rep. Foxx, the Republican Party and my Republican President have cut funding for veterans. I say, back that statement up with facts. That's right, prove it....Your letter is all political and on top of that you don't even tell the truth."

Can anyone help me with this?  I need concrete data.

Thanks

Join the Army, Get Shelled & Owe $4,000 (the 5-13 SNAFU)

Tue Nov 14, 2006 at 10:54:05 AM PDT

A friend just told me about the Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), and I was absolutely blown away at the first article I read there.  If you haven't checked out this site before, do it now.  It's a real eye-opener.

We've all seen those yellow ribbon / support our troops magnets.  And we all know what a crock of shit they are.  The Bush Administration cares nothing for our troops.  They use them in a sick effort to create chaos so Halliburton et al can go in and steal all they want while our troops put out the fires and try to provide cover.  We've also heard of the crap way the Defense Dept. treats them when they return home.  Their support of our troops amounts to a pile of car magnets.  When Bush has gotten what he wants out of them, he tosses them on the heap like so much rubbish.

The story I read at the above site blew me away.  Imagine, volunteering for the Army, getting shelled and wounded in combat, and being told you OWE Uncle Sam four grand when you're discharged.

Make the jump...

Dems should start with GI Bill

Sat Nov 11, 2006 at 04:39:41 PM PDT

The Montgomery GI Bill has helped so many veterans re-start their lives after serving our country. The Iraq Occupation creates a new dynamic for the Reservists and National Guard troops who constitute a large percentage of the forces seeing action. These troops are not eligible for the education benefits provided for by the bill. Reservists and Guard troops who have been sent to war in Iraq and Afghanistan don't get the same benefits as active service members. Under the law reservists and Guard troops are veterans for every benefit except education. Many groups were working to get corrupt, rubberstamp Congress to provide more equality in education benefits for citizen soldiers in what it is calling the Total Force Montgomery GI Bill. It would allow reservists to earn education credits while mobilized, just like active-duty troops do, and then use them after they leave the service. They can collect only if they remain in a Guard or Reserve unit. If they go into the inactive Reserve or are discharged, they no longer are eligible for education benefits.

BILL WINTER, CO-06: OH THE THINGS WE WILL DO!

Sun Nov 05, 2006 at 09:09:04 AM PDT

Oh the things we will do when we take back the House!
We'll be strong--like a lion!
Not meek--like a mouse!

We will fight for ALL people
not only the wealthy.
We'll work to make sure
ALL people are healthy!

We'll work for security
but also for peace.
Give ALL kids a chance
including my niece!

We'll care for our veterans
who kept us all free.
We'll fight for our rights
and feed Freedom's tree.

We'll boost the economy
and find people jobs.
We'll fight for clean air
and not just for snobs.

We'll make sure our teachers
get pay and respect
and that nurses and firemen
aren't left in the dreck.

We'll work to make sure
all religions are equal,
and our next six great years
aren't just a Bush sequel.
